have you tried any of my DIY’s?

February 27, 2012~ DIY DREAM HOUSE

remember when i showcased my talented readers who sent me their DIY projects using my DIY tutorials?  well, i want to start doing that again!  so if you’ve tried any of my DIY’s and would like to be featured, please send me your projects to sarahmchoi{at}gmail.com with the following:

1. your name
2. the picture/video of your copy of my DIY.  send me as many as you want!
3. link to your blog/website(if you want me to link to your site).

i can’t wait to see what you have done!

and i have a question for you…

remember when i had a giveaway for doing a DIY for the winner using their old/outdated item of clothing?  well, the winner never contacted me back after countless tries.  then i chose another winner and i never got a reply from the second winner either.  so i guess they didn’t trust me after all?  haha, so i’m wondering, if i had the same giveaway again, would you enter?  and most importantly, would you go through with it and trust me to transform your item of clothing?

Altered Couture Magazine.

November 15, 2011~ Etc.

i was told i didn’t look excited enough hence the second take. but this time I just look borderline creepy! πŸ˜‰
you can imagine my surprise when a top-selling, national, fashion magazine managing editor contacted me and asked if one of my DIY tutorial could be featured in the Altered Couture magazine, so just imagine how much more surprised i was when i received the magazine a couple weeks ago and saw my work on the front cover of their november issue!  that was the last thing i was expecting so it was a very pleasant surprise!
the magazine is filled with many, many tutorials and helpful tips.
thank you Stampington & Company for the wonderful opportunity!

simple little girl’s dress

June 1, 2011~ Etc.

i would like to thank everyone who voted for me for top 25 with style,
some voted many times, some everyday and i’m so grateful for each one of you!
i made it to rank 12th and i’m so honored.  i’ll be having a giveaway within a few weeks!
Circle of Moms Favorite

i have this shirred tube top dress that shrunk like crazy.

so i just added gold ribbon as straps and now it’s a perfect maxi dress for my little one.
and adi picked out this fabric awhile ago so that i could make her a dress
and i finally got around to it this past weekend.  i used no pattern and just made it
with the above dress design in my head.
it only took 1 1/4 yards to make 2 dresses.
and guess what? it’s finally sunny and warm here in UT woo hoo!!!

girls’ tulle skirt and modestifying a short dress

February 14, 2011~ SEWING

i have two happy news.  i was featured in a great craft blog called u-create and i made it to the top 10 knock-off contest.  to be honest when i looked at the other top 9, my exact thoughts were, “oh crap! the other ones are so good and mine sucks!” i felt a little embarrassed i’m not gonna lie! haha, don’t worry i’m not sad by any means, i was just in awe at how amazing the other 9 were and how much time they’d spent on their projects while mine took like an hr.  i kept thinking what other project i could’ve submitted instead but what’s done is done and i’m honored to be in the top 10.  and the winner gets chosen by votes but i’m not asking you to vote for me, i know i won’t make it, i just want you to check out the other 9, you will be blown away! i think my favorites are the wedding dress and the BCBG dress.

for this week’s DIY, i made two things.
i made a tulle ruffle skirt for my girl and modestified a short dress.
she’s been wearing these necklaces everyday.
i wish i could say the same about the skirt but she doesn’t like it actually
because she says, “it doesn’t spin around like a princess.”  πŸ™

on to my 2nd project

before the dress was modestified and before the mirror was cleaned. πŸ˜‰

 bought fabric from joann’s
(i didn’t have the dress with me (which i don’t recommend) so i just bought it hoping it was the same color and i was lucky enough to have it be the same exact fabric and color!)

1. unpick the seams on the bottom of the skirt.
2. lay the fabric on top of the dress so the ends meet.
the right side of the dress and the right side of the fabric are together.
3. sew the ends together all the way around the bottom of the skirt.

4. pull the sewed fabric down and hem the bottom of the newly-length dress.

after:

i recommend ironing it too which i didn’t do(i hate ironing!).
it would flatten the hem and make it less noticeable i think.

and i paired it with red lips, leopard heels and a bracelet and
wore this to a valentine’s dance this past saturday.

happy valentine’s day everyone!

giveaway winner+design contest+J.Crew DIY project

October 25, 2010~ SEWING

in case you missed my saturday’s post

my dress made it to the top 15 for the dress design contest!!!  i can’t believe the old skirt i found in my mom’s closets even made it to the top 15 because the 14 other designs are really great.  but of course i’m so happy and grateful!!!  so if you’d like, you can vote for my dress #9 by voting here.  voting ends monday, nov.15th.

thank you for all your support, you guys are awesome!

onto my DIY project for this week:

my inspiration.
J.Crew ruffled flower top. (from the girls’ section)

in my closet I found:

a long baggy top

and a gray silk tank top, leftover from this top I made.

1. Cut five of 2″ thick strips from the tank top. 2. mark where you want the flower to be. 3. sew the strips in stitch length 5. 4. it should look like this. 5. pull just one of the two strings while pulling the fabric the opposite way. 6. it should ruffle like this. 7. place the ruffle on top of the shirt and pin it. then sew it on regular stitch length 2.5. 7. repeat again by placing the ruffle strip, pinning it, then sewing. 8. continue until the top part is covered. the middle part, you sew it in a little circle for the flower effect. 9. sew the ends by the neckline so it’s a clean seam. the left side isn’t finished, the right side is. 10. the inside of the shirt should look like this. 11. iron on medium setting with another fabric over it to protect the silk fabric from burning. *12. I also tailored the top into a plain long gray top. You are now DONE!!!

After:

Now go try it yourself! Best luck!

*i was a guest blogger for this project at sew dang cute and living with punks.
it’s an honor to be be featured on your awesome blogs, thank you!
