girls’ tulle skirt and modestifying a short dress

February 14, 2011~ SEWING

i have two happy news.  i was featured in a great craft blog called u-create and i made it to the top 10 knock-off contest.  to be honest when i looked at the other top 9, my exact thoughts were, “oh crap! the other ones are so good and mine sucks!” i felt a little embarrassed i’m not gonna lie! haha, don’t worry i’m not sad by any means, i was just in awe at how amazing the other 9 were and how much time they’d spent on their projects while mine took like an hr.  i kept thinking what other project i could’ve submitted instead but what’s done is done and i’m honored to be in the top 10.  and the winner gets chosen by votes but i’m not asking you to vote for me, i know i won’t make it, i just want you to check out the other 9, you will be blown away! i think my favorites are the wedding dress and the BCBG dress.

for this week’s DIY, i made two things.
i made a tulle ruffle skirt for my girl and modestified a short dress.
she’s been wearing these necklaces everyday.
i wish i could say the same about the skirt but she doesn’t like it actually
because she says, “it doesn’t spin around like a princess.”  πŸ™

on to my 2nd project

before the dress was modestified and before the mirror was cleaned. πŸ˜‰

 bought fabric from joann’s
(i didn’t have the dress with me (which i don’t recommend) so i just bought it hoping it was the same color and i was lucky enough to have it be the same exact fabric and color!)

1. unpick the seams on the bottom of the skirt.
2. lay the fabric on top of the dress so the ends meet.
the right side of the dress and the right side of the fabric are together.
3. sew the ends together all the way around the bottom of the skirt.

4. pull the sewed fabric down and hem the bottom of the newly-length dress.

after:

i recommend ironing it too which i didn’t do(i hate ironing!).
it would flatten the hem and make it less noticeable i think.

and i paired it with red lips, leopard heels and a bracelet and
wore this to a valentine’s dance this past saturday.

happy valentine’s day everyone!

Loving the tulle children's skirt! My daughter wants everything princess too – part of me loves that though, means she is still young and innocent πŸ™‚

And I feel you about hating ironing. I am the same way – I do it only when absolutely necessary – lol. A sewers bane.

Have a great week, found your site recently and love it!

So helpful! I was just mulling over how to fix several of my dresses that are not quite long enough anymore and this should do the trick!

Also I want to know how you made that adorable tulle skirt! I want to make one for my daughter…who am I kidding?!? I want one for me too!

I love the skirt and the way you modestified the dress. The dress looks like it came that way. I will have to keep that in mind.

Ok, I have to ask….how long did it take to make all those ruffles for her skirt? It looks painfully time consuming…

Wow, you did really well matching that red without the dress with you! I wanted to thank you for the tute, I'm tall, and very rarely find dresses that are long enough, I'll even occationally buy one, and then get it home and realize I can't get away with wearing it. I have a black dress so much like this red one, I'm totally going to do this!!

Great job with lengthening that dress. You got really lucky with the fabric. πŸ™‚

PS I think I'm allergic to ironing.

@beth: it is a little time consuming to make the skirt. i would say maybe 1 1/2 hrs.?

Whoa! That looks great. I was making a face, thinking that "modestifying" was going to ruin that beautiful dress! Not at all! I think it looks even better! You did a great job. I love that the horizontal seam contrasts so nicely with the vertical seams lending an art deco sytle.

Both are perfect. The tuile skirts are all the rage with the preschoolers I teach. Alas, my 9 year old, not so much! Thanks for linking up to Beyond The Picket Fence.

You are so talented! But, where on earth do you find the time to do all that sewing with little ones around?

I think it's so cute that your daughter doesn't like the skirt, because it doesn't spin around. When my daughter was your daughter's age, the criteria she had for all dresses, skirts, and shoes was that the clothes had to twirl when she spun around, and her shoes had to make a tapping sound on the floor when she walked. Don't ya just love that age! πŸ˜‰

Thanks for linking your creativity to my party each week.

My daughter likes skirts that twirl like a princess too. I use the instructions for making a pettiskirt but use different fabrics to get the twirl she loves. Love your blog!
