DIY Sewing: Women Swimsuit to Tween Size Alteration Tutorial

October 24, 2019~ Refashion Revision, SEWING, YOUTUBE VIDEOS

In this easy tutorial, learn how to turn an adult women’s swimsuit into a tween size swimsuit.

My daughter really loved this swimsuit that she found online but it only came in adult women size. She is a tween so we bought it and altered it in a few easy steps and now the swimsuit fits her perfectly!

I thought it would be helpful for those of you who might want to do this as well so here is a video tutorial below on how it was done!

Refashion Revision: Embroidered Dress Upcycle

July 17, 2019~ Refashion Revision, SEWING

BEFORE

Learn how to refashion this outdated embroidered dress into a cute dress in this upcycle tutorial

I bought this dress brand new but it was from a clearance section and they only had one left and it wasn’t in my size. I absolutely love embroidered clothes because as a seamstress, I appreciate the extra details and the TLC that goes into the clothing since I know how long that must have taken to embroider. So I snatched it without a second thought and then completely forgot about it. But last week as I was organizing my sewing room, I came upon this dress and got so excited! Refashioning outdated or ill-fitting clothes into new feels just like when you buy a new clothing item you love, but even better! Because you have that sense of accomplishment and pride into your finished art piece.

Watch the video tutorial below or keep scrolling to see a picture tutorial.

Tutorial:

Fold the end over and sew all the way down the strip. Then use a safety pin to flip it inside out, hem the ends and you are done!

BEFORE/AFTER

I only had one hour to complete this refashion in order to take photos of the transformation before the sun went down. like this shoot that happened in front of my garage, taken by no other photographer than my 10 year old daughter that I bribed and paid $3 to. What can I say, I am all about that fancy life!

Nashville Here We Come

December 5, 2018~ Refashion Revision

Me and the girls are leaving today to Nashville to be on the Pickler and Ben show, wish us luck!

I’ll be wearing this dress I refashioned many years ago, see the original post here: https://www.ourlifeisbeautiful.com/anthropologie-tangerine-flicker-dress/ during the segment. I’ll be showing easy ways to update an old sweater, along with my girls!

The girls are so excited to be on t.v. Me, not so much but I am trying to step out of my comfort zone and do things I don’t like or feel comfortable with.

If you have any recommendations for what to do or  eat in Nashville, please let me know in the comments!

DIY: Upcycle an old bag into a faux fur bag

November 28, 2018~ Refashion Revision, SEWING

Faux Fur Handbag Refashion Tutorial

Learn how to make this no-sew, faux fur handbag that is super easy to make!

This Refashion Revision tutorial was created on behalf of JOANN, all thoughts, ideas and writing are my own.

This DIY tutorial is super easy and super fast, you are going to love it! I found some beautiful faux fur fabric at JOANN and immediately had a vision of a faux fur handbag. I usually find an item from a thrifted store or my closet first and then go fabric shopping but this time, it was the fabric that inspired me first and not the other way around! Adding faux fur is a great way to make an old, outdated bag look sophisticated and chic. It makes a bag instantly look more posh and upscale. And the best part? No sewing is required!

Faux Fur Bag Refashion Tutorial

Supplies:

Faux fur fabric

Fray check

Fabric fusion tape

Scissors

Instructions:

1. Trace the bag on a paper.

2. Using the traced circle pattern, cut out a circle from the faux fur fabric.

3. Shake out/gently pull out any loose fur.

4. Dab generously around the edges with fray check.

5. Cover the entire side of the purse using the fabric fusion stick-n-peel tape.

6. After making sure it’s well pressed, peel out the top of the tape so that both sides are sticky.

7. Place the circle fabric on top of the taped side of the bag and press it firmly all around.

That’s it! Easy, peasy!

I also refashioned this backpack below using the same method as above.

Estimated time: 15 minutes

Budget: $10-$15

Skill level: A beginner

Do you think you have any old bags in your closet that you can refashion into a sophisticated and posh faux fur bag? Would you try it?

Men’s Shirt to Dress Transformation

Men's shirt refashion DIY
Make this fall style flannel dress from a large men’s shirt in this DIY transformation.

This DIY was created on behalf of JOANN, all thoughts, ideas and writing are my own.

I’ve had this flannel men’s shirt in my to-sew stash for awhile now. I had initially planned on using this, along with two other flannel men’s shirts and combine it to make a dress for me, but my daughter really liked this fabric and how soft it felt, and asked me if I could make something for her. She’s now almost too tall for me to make a dress for her out of a men’s shirt so I was a little nervous it would be too short for her but the length turned out to be perfect! I probably only have about a year left to be able to make dresses for her from a men’s shirt so I should do a lot more of men’s shirt refashions, don’t you think?

If you want to make one just like this but can’t find a men’s shirt in this fabric, JOANN has this exact flannel fabric in white buffalo check and other great selections of flannel fabrics in a variety of patterns.

So let’s get this tutorial started! Watch the video or scroll down for written instructions.

Supplies

Men’s shirt or 1 yard of flannel fabric

sewing machine

scissors

thread

seam ripper

7 buttons

hand needle

BEFORE

Instructions

Transform men's shirt 1. Lay out the shirt on a flat surface. Smooth out any wrinkles or folds and make sure the front and the back are aligned.

Transform men's shirt 2. Cut the bodice and the skirt of the dress. Using a seam ripper, take the pocket off.

Transform men's shirt 3. Cut a smaller size sleeves out of the original sleeves.

Transform men's shirt 4. It will look like this.

Transform men's shirt 5. Now that we have the bodice, skirt and the sleeves, we are ready to sew!

Transform men's shirt 6. Using stitch length 5, sew all the way around the tip of the skirt.

Transform men's shirt 7. Gather the skirt by pulling one side of the thread.

8. Sew the skirt and the sleeves back onto the bodice and hem the edge of the sleeves and the neckline.

Then you are finished!
