DIY: tailoring dresses. lots of it.

September 10, 2012~ SEWING

I tailored a ton of clothes.  Once again, very simple, but it makes it so much more flattering to the body.

Before/after:

I modestified this dress a long time ago in this post, but the dress shrunk and lost some of it’s length.  I bought the closest green fabric available and added some length to the dress.

Dress: F21
With this dress, I just took in the waist part of the dress to make it more fitting.  It’s hard to tell but if you look closely, the waist part in the after picture is taken in so it looks more hourglass. The bottom hem was a bubble hem so I cut the linen part and then resewed the hem, so it lengthened it just a tad.
|Peter pan collar dress: Ministry of Magic(c/o) |
With this dress, I lengthened it by adding black fabric, and tailored the sides of the dress to make it more slim fitting.
Gold sequin-sleeve dress: Oasap(c/o)
I forgot to take a before picture of this dress(darn it!), I was too excited to tailor it so I could wear it.  It wasn’t a huge change, it looked a lot like the above black dress before it was tailored.  I took the waist part in to make it more figure flattering.

Cream lace dress: Ministry of Retail(c/o)
This dress was like a tent.  It was way too big, way too long, not flattering at all.  I took in the sides, the length(to make it shorter this time), and sewed the low v-neckline together to make it higher.
Striped maxi dress: TJ Maxx
Whew, so there you go.  Next week, I will be showing a DIY that’s one of my favorite DIY’s I’ve done so far.  And I don’t throw those words around easily, so it’s going to be a good one!

I have loved your blog for a while, but today I came over from the Sew Chatty link. 1) I love how modest but stylish all of your clothing is. 2) You have definitely shown me how important it is to alter clothing, so it fits perfectly. It makes everything look more expensive! I'm working on simplifying my wardrobe and life by consuming less, so I'll be using your tutorials to reuse many of my old items of clothing πŸ™‚

I wish I could do this stuff! I don't have a sewing machine but it's okay because it would take me forever to figure out how to use it.

Wowwww.. Since I have quite "big tall body" I could't buy XL dress to alter.. F21 I'm using is in L size. But this is a fresh idea.. Love your blog, Sarah.. Have a nice day..

Wow, I'm definitely impressed… by your seamstress skills, as well as by what a difference a "simple" (haha) alteration makes! I've passed up SO many outfits because they didn't "fit right" (I have an hourglass figure, with a rather large top and bottom, that is very hard to find clothes to fit without looking like a tent!) πŸ™‚ Do you think you could give some kind of tutorial about how you take in waists like that?

I love the way you've taken in so many dresses. They look great. Were they lined, or no?

I really like your alterations posts. Very practical. However, to be honest, I don't think those tights are a very flattering shade on you. You have super cute legs. Maybe try a different color?

SOme were lined, those that were lined I lifted up the lining and just sewed the actual fabric. Hope that helps, and thanks for your comment!

how do i alter the waist of my dress? It's a one piece dress (ie. no cut in the middle) and has a waistline that drops above my waist, hipline that drops above my hip, so now it just looks funny on me….
