Raspberry Picking + how to make a 30 min. raspberry jam

August 20, 2014~ Etc.

Ruffle sleeve top | Necklace: PaveMaison
I’ve been wanting to make raspberry jam for a long time and we finally went raspberry picking!  It was scorching hot and the raspberries were sparse but I was determined to pick enough to make raspberry jam.  Homemade jam sounds intimidating(at least it did to me) but it’s really easy to make.  You only need 4 ingredients and it takes 30 minutes to make.  I made raspberry jam a couple years ago and followed the instructions to the T but it turned out way, way too sweet.  It asked for 5 1/4 cups sugar but this time I added only 1 1/2 cups and it was just perfect for us.
Homemade Raspberry Jam
What You Need

3 cups prepared fruit (buy about 6 cups fully ripe red raspberries)
1 1/2 cup sugar, measured into separate bowl
3/4 cup water
1 box SURE-JELL Fruit Pectin(for less sugar)

Make It

Rinse clean plastic containers and lids with boiling water. Dry thoroughly.
Crush raspberries thoroughly, one layer at a time. (Press half of pulp through a sieve to remove seeds, if desired.) Measure exactly 3 cups crushed raspberries into large bowl. Stir in sugar. Let stand 10 min., stirring occasionally.
Mix water and pectin in small saucepan. Bring to boil on high heat, stirring constantly. Continue boiling and stirring 1 min. Add to fruit mixture; stir 3 min.or until sugar is almost dissolved and no longer grainy. (A few sugar crystals may remain.)
Fill containers immediately to within 1/2 inch of tops. Wipe off top edges of containers; immediately cover with lids. Let stand at room temperature 24 hours. Jam is now ready to use. Store in refrigerator up to 3 weeks or freeze extra containers up to 1 year. Thaw in refrigerator before using.

Raspberry picking

August 14, 2012~ Etc.

{Crochet top & Skirt: c/o Romwe}
We decided to pick raspberries at the spur of the moment(this is as spontaneous as our life gets now a days, we are so wild!), and we are so glad we did.  The first half an hour for me was spent on just eating the raspberries and leaving my bag completely empty while everyone else was busy filling their bags.  But I managed to pick the most(3 lbs!), and we all went home happy with bagfuls of raspberries and our bellies full of them too… until we got hungry again about 20 minutes later so we later filled our bellies with hamburgers, shakes & fries, a much healthier choice, obviously.

This looks like so much fun though! I would love to go do something like that. Love your blog too, I now shop clearance racks a little different and don't think about passing things by just because they aren't my size. Now if I find a good deal and the item is too big, I just plan to take it home and alter it. πŸ™‚ Thanks for the inspiration!

raspberry picking.

October 6, 2011~ Etc.

we went to an orchard to pick some raspberries so i can make raspberry jam
and to eat it fresh of course.  our girls loved it because as you pick them youself,
you could eat as many as you want.  okay, okay, i loved it too,
i was hungry when we went but by the time we were finished,
i was so full of raspberries.  man, i was one happy girl!

it was so beautiful there and there’s something about being so close in nature
and hand picking fresh fruits(because you can hand pick not-fresh fruits;)
that makes you more grounded and helps to realign your priorities in life.
and on our drive home, my husband and i talked excitedly
about living in a 40 acre land one day and owning an orchard full of raspberries,
blackberries, strawberries, cherries, grapes, and whatever else we could dream of.
my husband also wants to own an animal farm but are you kidding me?
there is NO way i will wake up at 3 in the morning to feed some chickens,
and milk the cows!  i’m not a city girl but i’m not a country girl either.
but a fruit farm?  i think i can live with that. πŸ˜‰

Wow this looks like so much fun! Where is this farm anyway? It's always so much fun to read your blog. I was one of Elder Tyau's MTC teachers and think of him every time I read your posts. Hope you and the kids are doing well! πŸ™‚

heaven!:)) I totally agree with your opinion-I'd love to have a beautiful garden full of raspberries and other fruit, but I'd also wouldn't be able to wake up so early and take care of the animals;)
    have a beautiful day!

I love "you pick em" farms! My cousin just took me to an orchard and I totally fell in love with it! I want to own an orchard and have hay rides, and a little market, and festivals and maybe even a pumpkin patch and corn maze Halloween and apple cider, and apple beer (my husband wants to own a small brewery… Best of both right?) and a Christmas tree farm and make baked goods and have the grandiose come help in the orchard and….

Yep, I totally get it. I want a farm too πŸ˜‰

I never knew there was a raspberry Upick farm in Utah! I have actually googled and tried to find one ever since we moved here 5 years ago from Vermont. That was my kid's FAVORITE thing in Vermont…our huge raspberry patch. We'd just go out back and eat breakfast off the bushes. It was heaven. I have planted two bushes here, but they haven't taken off yet and so far we've gotten nada (only 2 years though). Hope they thrive eventually.

Thanks for sharing this tidbit. Really, it's a bit of a drive from SLC, but to know that we have the option at least will be fun next summer.

BTW: just found your blog today via Mindy. You're adorable! I have been reading another remaker-sewer-extraordinaire for a couple months, but she moved to China a little bit ago. I'd kind of thought I'd see if she could help modestify a gown I've had for a long time but now she's gone. Is that something you would consider doing for non-amazing famous singer types? We could probably work out some kind of compensation. (I've got other skillz and hookups)

Anyway, thanks again for the raspberry tip. One day next summer I'm going to TOTALLY win that MOTY* award!

    Have a happy weekend!
