Hello everyone! This week’s challenge was the most difficult and challenging week for me. I’ve never made a handbag/purse/clutch of any kind before and had no idea what I was going to make. I thought oh, I have almost a week to decide and make it, then the day before our family’s trip, I realized I didn’t have all week to turn it in, I needed to turn it in before I leave on our trip! So I had one day to figure it out and make it and submit this post, but I made it guys, WHEW! And I am very happy with how it turned out!

DIY: XXL shirt into a little girls dress
A XXL women’s shirt into a little girls dress w/ tulip pockets
BEFORE:
my son refused to move away so a picture with him it is! I’ve learned to choose my battles and also think to myself, “Will this matter in the end on my deathbed?” That is how I survive motherhood. 🙂
Right when I saw this XXL women’s shirt at a thrift store for $5(it still had the tags on, don’t you love when that happens?), I automatically had an image pop in my head so I started on the project hoping it would execute just the way I imagined.
Before the DIY – refreshing up my vintage clothes
On President’s Day last Monday, Saver’s Thrift Store had 50% off all their clothes, a deal I couldn’t pass up. I found some clothes for my girls and I found three awesome dresses for me that I am so excited to refashion! This red dress is one of them, don’t you just love the pleated detail? My girls, not remembering the last time we went to a thrift store, asked what Saver’s was and when I explained that it was old clothes that people no longer wear or wanted so they donate it, they said to me, “Ewww. That’s gross.” Then when they walked in the store they said, “Ewww. It smells weird in here.” So what did I do? I made them look around the store until they both found something they loved so we can purchase it while explaining why it’s great to recycle and donate. One of my biggest goals in life is to not raise spoiled, entitled and ungrateful kids, and I feel so strongly about that. But one thing I had to agree with the girls is, the first thing I do when I buy clothes from vintage finds is to go home and wash it so it smells like it’s mine, and not some cute 80 year old grandma’s closet!
So when we got home, we put all the clothes we purchased in the washer along with the Unstopables in-wash scent booster and when it came out of the wash, it smelled so good! The scent booster infuses linens, towels, clothes and other fabrics with sophisticated scents, my favorite scent being Fresh. We use the scent booster every time we wash, it just makes our clothes smell really good. I put less than what the directions says because I don’t like strong scents so it’s a subtle smell that is just perfect for me. The scent lasts up to 12 weeks out of storage so it’ll smell good as long as you wear it, even for those times when you wear the same outfit two days in a row(guilty)!
There are many other Unstopables products offered such as the fabric refresher, air refresher, scented oil warmer, and candles. My other favorite product we’ve been using is the scented oil warmer, it lasts for 3 months once you plug it in, and we have it plugged in right in the middle of our house in our living room to make sure the scent permeates throughout the whole house.
Here is a tip from Nate Berkus about updating your space. “When you get bored with your room, the easiest thing to do is switch it up! Consider moving your sofa to another wall, bring in a side table from another room, swap out your throw pillows. You can totally refresh a room without spending a cent. For curtains, couches and rugs that can’t be washed, a few spritzes of Unstopables Fabric Refresher will add long-lasting freshness.”
So now that my clothes are clean and smelling fresh, I am so excited to refashion these dresses! Stay tuned!

DIY: Plaid silk dress with pockets for girls
Remember this plaid silk fabric I bought? Right when I saw it I knew it’d make a perfect Christmas dress. I initially wanted to make it for myself, but then decided it would be cuter on a little girl. I envisioned a simple short sleeve tunic dress with front pockets and this is the result:
It has gold lining inside which makes it even more perfect as a Christmas dress, don’t you think? Since it’s such a simple design, I didn’t use a pattern and traced one of the girl’s dresses for the sleeves and the bodice.
What you’ll need(for one dress):
-1 yard of fabric
-1 yard of lining
-matching thread
-needle or sewing machine
-scissors
-buttons
Estimated time: 2 hrs.
Budget: $13
Skill level: A confident beginner or intermediate
