Before the DIY – refreshing up my vintage clothes

February 27, 2015~ SEWING

On President’s Day last Monday, Saver’s Thrift Store had 50% off all their clothes, a deal I couldn’t pass up.  I found some clothes for my girls and I found three awesome dresses for me that I am so excited to refashion!  This red dress is one of them, don’t you just love the pleated detail?  My girls, not remembering the last time we went to a thrift store, asked what Saver’s was and when I explained that it was old clothes that people no longer wear or wanted so they donate it, they said to me, “Ewww.  That’s gross.”  Then when they walked in the store they said, “Ewww.  It smells weird in here.”  So what did I do?  I made them look around the store until they both found something they loved so we can purchase it while explaining why it’s great to recycle and donate.  One of my biggest goals in life is to not raise spoiled, entitled and ungrateful kids, and I feel so strongly about that.  But one thing I had to agree with the girls is, the first thing I do when I buy clothes from vintage finds is to go home and wash it so it smells like it’s mine, and not some cute 80 year old grandma’s closet!
So when we got home, we put all the clothes we purchased in the washer along with the Unstopables in-wash scent booster and when it came out of the wash, it smelled so good!  The scent booster infuses linens, towels, clothes and other fabrics with sophisticated scents, my favorite scent being Fresh.  We use the scent booster every time we wash, it just makes our clothes smell really good.  I put less than what the directions says because I don’t like strong scents so it’s a subtle smell that is just perfect for me.  The scent lasts up to 12 weeks out of storage so it’ll smell good as long as you wear it, even for those times when you wear the same outfit two days in a row(guilty)!
There are many other Unstopables products offered such as the fabric refresher, air refresher, scented oil warmer, and candles.  My other favorite product we’ve been using is the scented oil warmer, it lasts for 3 months once you plug it in, and we have it plugged in right in the middle of our house in our living room to make sure the scent permeates throughout the whole house.
Here is a tip from Nate Berkus about updating your space.  “When you get bored with your room, the easiest thing to do is switch it up! Consider moving your sofa to another wall, bring in a side table from another room, swap out your throw pillows. You can totally refresh a room without spending a cent. For curtains, couches and rugs that can’t be washed, a few spritzes of Unstopables Fabric Refresher will add long-lasting freshness.”
So now that my clothes are clean and smelling fresh, I am so excited to refashion these dresses!  Stay tuned!

What I’ve been up to lately

February 13, 2015~ Etc.

Random things I’ve been up to the past week: We recently bought a cow and had some people over for dinner for some t-bone steak!  Jay is super serious about his steak and uses the thermometer every time to get to the perfect medium medium we both like. Modeled for some Agnes and Dora apparel, […]
