we had a laid back memorial day weekend.
jay was busy renovating our basement but he let me sleep in every single morning.
it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nice.
wait, i don’t think that was enough o’s, let me add more oooooooooooo’s to that. π
we had a friend over one night for dinner whose wifeless for a few weeks,
and had my parents over for dinner another night who just got back from out of town
which meant i was busy cooking. i was hesitant to experiment with these recipes
for the first time when we were having guests but they all turned out really good!
seafood bibimbap
when a recipe asks for sweetened condensed milk-i’m SOLD.
the girls wanted to take pictures too.
or more like stealing the cookies while i was busy looking at the camera.
i also went to joann’s twice to buy some fabric but came out of the store empty both times. there was this fabric i fell in love with so i wanted to make a dress but i needed 2 yards and it would’ve came out to $30. but it was 50% off but with lining($5), zipper($3), thread($3), it would’ve came out to $26. am i just super frugal or is that expensive to you too? i just got 2 dresses from banana republic for $20 each, and a dress from bebe for $10(thanks, sis) so why would i spend $26 for material when i buy dresses for less than that minus like 6 hrs. of sewing? that is one of the biggest reasons why i don’t make things from scratch but instead alter/re-design things from vintage stores/sales racks. oh, but even thrift stores are expensive too! i get clothes on sale for less than what they offer and it’s brand new! i wish i lived in LA where they have bunch of cool fabric stores with so many options! so i wanted to ask you if you know of any cool places to shop for fabric in store(in UT) or online? i know of joann’s, hobby lobby, ikea, wal mart and that’s about it. π so if you could help a fellow seamstress out, i’d so appreciate it, por favor!

Oooo, that all looks SO good!
I have the same problem with sewing things. Out in the country it's a pretty long drive to get to any fabric stores, and because there are so few, it's pretty expensive. We luck out sometimes with sales, but mostly I try to alter things from sales racks and thrift stores.

Yum! I haven't made homemade taquitos before.

i just do what you do…I shop all the thrift stores in the highest sizes – so that I have lots of material to use.
I just found a beautiful red coat in a women's size 20 that I'm going to make my granddaughter a winter coat out of. (she's four) I was almost in shock that I bought all that wool with lining and buttons for a dollar……
Yard sales in our area on the second day are a huge score …I scan the papers for "large women's sizes" ha…..

i buy most of my fabric from fabric.com. they have normal clearance items up to 65% off, and they run sales all the time.

Hancock fabrics has nice materials, but they are not cheap. That WAS you at JoAnn's this weekend. I'm the crazy girl that kept following you around and staring in awe. I finally ended up at JoAnn's because I can't figure out how you repurpose clothing and I decided to start from scratch because I can do that. When I saw you there I wanted to ask you SO badly how you find stuff and see its potential, but I never got up the nerve. Tell me how and try to forgive the strange stalker-girl!

i am so with you on the sweetened condensed milk! i made a raspberry dark chocolate cheesecake over the weekend that called for a can in lieu of sugar and i was literally licking it off the lid! ew, right?! but i couldn't stop – reminds me of thai iced tea and this great restaurant i worked at years ago : )

hi! i am a sewer too and i totally agree with you on the expensive part. why spend most of the day sewing when you can buy it cheaper?? right? anyways, i really like Hancock Fabrics in Orem they have good sales & coupons, Broadbents in Lehi, the Fabric Center in South Jordan (90th south and redwood) and if you are ever in south utah county, you have to go to Gracie Lou's in Salem. They have the CUTEST fabric. some of it is $8/yard but it is way cute! By far my favorite place!! hope this helps. π

@stacey: you should've totally came and asked! And I don't recognize you so don't worry, your stalking was good enough that i didn't even know! π
@steph: Hahaha, you made me literally laugh out loud at the licking the lid part. because I did the same exact thing too! I was thinking no one better see me doing this because they're gonna think it's gross but i can't help it, it's so good! and that cheesecake sounds divine! π
and thank you everyone, that was such a HUGE help, thank you so much!!! π

Sarah, wished you lived here in LA where we could go to the garment district.. Fabric is so cheap and clothes are $5, $10. You would be in heaven…
