for this week's DIY, i made two things.
i made a tulle ruffle skirt for my girl and modestified a short dress.
i made a tulle ruffle skirt for my girl and modestified a short dress.
she's been wearing these necklaces everyday.
i wish i could say the same about the skirt but she doesn't like it actually
because she says, "it doesn't spin around like a princess." :(
on to my 2nd project
before the dress was modestified and before the mirror was cleaned. ;)
bought fabric from joann's
(i didn't have the dress with me (which i don't recommend) so i just bought it hoping it was the same color and i was lucky enough to have it be the same exact fabric and color!)
4. pull the sewed fabric down and hem the bottom of the newly-length dress.
after:
i recommend ironing it too which i didn't do(i hate ironing!).
it would flatten the hem and make it less noticeable i think.
and i paired it with red lips, leopard heels and a bracelet and
wore this to a valentine's dance this past saturday.

1. unpick the seams on the bottom of the skirt.
2. lay the fabric on top of the dress so the ends meet.
the right side of the dress and the right side of the fabric are together.
3. sew the ends together all the way around the bottom of the skirt.

Loving the tulle children's skirt! My daughter wants everything princess too - part of me loves that though, means she is still young and innocent :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I feel you about hating ironing. I am the same way - I do it only when absolutely necessary - lol. A sewers bane.
Have a great week, found your site recently and love it!
love both of those! I really should do just that to a few of my dreses to make them appropriate for work :)
ReplyDeleteSo helpful! I was just mulling over how to fix several of my dresses that are not quite long enough anymore and this should do the trick!
ReplyDeleteAlso I want to know how you made that adorable tulle skirt! I want to make one for my daughter...who am I kidding?!? I want one for me too!
I love the skirt and the way you modestified the dress. The dress looks like it came that way. I will have to keep that in mind.

Ok, I have to ask....how long did it take to make all those ruffles for her skirt? It looks painfully time consuming...
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! I thought you would want to know that I linked over to your black "ruffle around me" top tutorial. I attempted my own version based off your tutorial and blogged about it. Thank you so much! :-)

Sarah looks great like always! Miss you pretty lady! Let's have a phone date soon!!!
ReplyDeleteOkay love it! The dress is so awesome because you are the perfect shape! Way cute! :)
ReplyDeleteYou are always sooooooooo creative!!!!Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, as always! You are very talented. Hey you might be interested in joining a new refashion community blog, we are looking for contributors! http://refashionco-op.blogspot.com/ x
ReplyDeleteWow, you did really well matching that red without the dress with you! I wanted to thank you for the tute, I'm tall, and very rarely find dresses that are long enough, I'll even occationally buy one, and then get it home and realize I can't get away with wearing it. I have a black dress so much like this red one, I'm totally going to do this!!
ReplyDeleteLove the tulle skirt!! I want one for my little girl.
ReplyDeleteGreat job with lengthening that dress. You got really lucky with the fabric. :)
PS I think I'm allergic to ironing.
so beautiful Sarah! luv the red dress! maybe I should try this even though I can't even sew a button.. hahah
ReplyDeleteGreat tip! And the Tulle skirt for your daughter is awesome. I love it. Thanks so much for sharing!

I LOVE that tulle skirt! Can you do a tutorial for that? I want to make it for myself!!! haha...but seriously. In love!
ReplyDelete@beth: it is a little time consuming to make the skirt. i would say maybe 1 1/2 hrs.?
ReplyDeleteWhoa! That looks great. I was making a face, thinking that "modestifying" was going to ruin that beautiful dress! Not at all! I think it looks even better! You did a great job. I love that the horizontal seam contrasts so nicely with the vertical seams lending an art deco sytle.
ReplyDeleteBoth are perfect. The tuile skirts are all the rage with the preschoolers I teach. Alas, my 9 year old, not so much! Thanks for linking up to Beyond The Picket Fence.
ReplyDeleteYou are so talented! But, where on earth do you find the time to do all that sewing with little ones around?
ReplyDeleteI think it's so cute that your daughter doesn't like the skirt, because it doesn't spin around. When my daughter was your daughter's age, the criteria she had for all dresses, skirts, and shoes was that the clothes had to twirl when she spun around, and her shoes had to make a tapping sound on the floor when she walked. Don't ya just love that age! ;)
Thanks for linking your creativity to my party each week.

ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to see a tutorial on the tulle skirt! its darling! I'd wear it as an adult!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love that tulle skirt too! And hope for a tutorial some day?!:)
ReplyDeleteMy daughter likes skirts that twirl like a princess too. I use the instructions for making a pettiskirt but use different fabrics to get the twirl she loves. Love your blog!
