okay i’m in such shock right now.
tell me if you think this coat is cute.
tell me if you think this coat is cute.
i told my husband a few weeks ago how i couldn’t stop thinking about the cutest coat i’ve ever seen in my life. i told him, “but it’s $300.” he told me i could get it. but then i thought, ‘oh man, think of how many things i could buy with $300! should i buy that coat or buy lots of things instead?’ and me being such a frugal shopper, a $300 worth of clothes would get me about 4 pairs of jeans, 20 tops, and 5 pairs of shoes. i’m not exaggerating, i really would buy that much for that much.
so i showed him this coat just now and to my shock and dismay, his exact words were “that? i think that’s UGLY!” after saying “NO WAY! are you serious? are you really being serious right now? are you telling me you don’t like it just because you don’t want me to spend the money?”i asked him how he would rate the coat from a scale from 1-10.
he said 3.
THREE, tres, 3!
can you believe it?
why don’t guys like clothes us girls like? or is it just me?
my husband doesn’t like floral prints or vintage(he asks me everytime, “oh i didn’t know you raided your grandma’s closet recently!), dressy tops, and he absolutely HATES my oxford shoes i’ve recently purchased and told me to please only wear them when i go out on girls’ night out. hahaha. his favorite outfit on me is shorts, t-shirt,slippers, and hardly no makeup with no foundation or powder. i did read somewhere that guys don’t like distracting prints, they prefer solid colors that are tight that shows off the body’s shapes and curves.
so my question is: is it just me or do your husbands/boyfriends/guyfriends hate some of the clothes you wear? if they do, what is it? and if any of you men are reading this, do you think this coat is cute or just a 3?
Charlie says
well I wouldn't pay 300 for that coat either, it's a 6. π My boyfriend loves my vintage stuff, but my dad doesn't. Daddy says it's flat boots or sneakers, jeans and a plain tee. π
by night says
My husband doesn't always like what I buy or make. Mostly when it has black and white prints. I have no idea why.
Jodz says
My husband rated the coat a 7. Yey! He has some taste. I think the coat is just gorgeous and worth the money. It would be a lovely statement piece.
dotblogg says
Oh !for me this coat is 7, but I don't know if I paid so much money to buy it. I'm sure that having your skills I would think out something;)

My husband hates skinny jeans with a passion, so needless to say he doesn't like many of my outfits! But for the record I'm not a huge fan of this coat, especially considering how many awesome things you could get for $300 elsewhere…
LeRae says
For me, my husband usually likes what I wear but back when we were dating he told me he didn't like me in one of my hats. But then the hat was mens… hahaha
I just gave it to him and he wears it all the time now. I think he just wanted it.

I love the coat ! Its very different and striking. Makes a great statement, being "I own the look " π
Sarah says
Haha! My boyfriend says the exact same thing about me wearing "grandma clothes" and he hates my beloved cardigans.
Anne Brown says
I love that coat! I think it would look stunning on you. But whenever my husband says he doesn't like something, I usually don't wear it again for a while. I just bought some crazy floral print tights from Anthro and I could tell by the look on his face he didn't like them, but I loved them too much to ask his opinion.
I rate the coat a 10!
Carrie says
There is an important concept called "girl pretty/boy pretty." Rompers? Girl pretty. Headbands? Girl pretty. Most floral things? Girl pretty. Anything tight, low cut, otherwise kinda skanky? BOY PRETTY. hahaha It's true, I tell you! Once I figured this out I stopped feeling so shocked at the things my husband didn't really like while I loved them.
I have to say though, I think I'd prefer one of the jcrew wool coats to this one. Although this one is lovely and might be super super amazing in person.
Carrie says
Oh and by the way… Jay worked with my husband (Ben Tracy) at RC Willey a hundred years ago. He says hi to Jay. π
Queen Snarfy says
My husband just, plain and simply, does not understand fashion or trends. When we were dating, he told me his favorite outfit on me was a jean skirt and t-shirt. Recently I've bought some sexy heels that I love but every time I wear he makes some comment like, "Don't fall!" But! Surprise of all surprises, I put on an outfit that was pretty trendy for me (I'm usually pretty classic), A billowy tank top with a belt at the waist and a bolero cardigan, he said, "Wow! You look great today!" Of course, it was solid colors, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it… Who knows man's mind??
As far as the coat… It's not my typical style. I like the print, but not the style. I'll rate it a 6. But it's your money and your style, so it's what you think.
Lindsay says
The coat is cute, but not $300 cute!
My general rule is:
Trendy? go cheap.
Timeless Staple? Spend big.
Lauren says
I'm not a huge fan of the coat for myself, but I don't think it's ugly!
I feel like most guys prefer an Express or Victoria's Secret style (the clothes, not the lingerie). Those are the clothes girls wear to dress for guys. Girls wear Anthropologie or other vintage-esque clothing to dress for other girls.
I say who cares what the men think? Dress in what you like!
Linnea says
Ugh! YES! They just don't understand. And to my constant shock, I'll get the, "Wow you look cute!" My response is, "THIS!? THIS IS WHAT YOU THINK IS CUTE?"
Linnea says
P.S. this coat is cute, but why don't you buy an interior design fabric, contrast velvet and make it. and then get many other pretty things with the remaining $$
This out of print mccalls pattern reminds me of it http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m5531-products-8080.php?page_id=515
Mandy P. says
Wow, we may be married to the same guy. This happens to me all the time, and I too just bought new oxford shoes that I think are adorable. He hates them and reminds me nearly daily.
P.S. I love the coat!
syocom says
My husband loves vintage stuff and fun fashion stuff sometimes I think he is more into fashion than I am, and I'm a swim suit designer. Go figure. I think it depends on the guy, My sisters husband has the worst taste in cloths and likes my sister to match his "used sales car man" look (that is what we call it anyway)
Sarah says
@linnea: that pattern is very similar, thank you! i might have to make one… π
and i agree with everyone here. and i dress for myself and what i like, even though my husband's opinion i'll take into consideration like on his b-day or our date or something. but other than that, i wear what i want and for myself and nobody else. π
Kory says
HA HA HA HA! That's really funny. I don't know too many guys that are into frilly girl clothes, even if a girl is wearing them. That's really funny though.
Katharine says
I don't think I'd pay that much… The print is just a little busy, is all. I do very much like the piping though. My boyfriend is the same; he hates anything chic. He would so much prefer that I just wear a plain black pencil skirt and a girly little top than any neon, animal prints or crazy florals, which by the way are my favorites. I've been humoring him thus far by pairing plain skirts with crazy tops, but oh well. He generally has good taste, except that he only wears polo shirts (to work) and band t-shirts. I'm getting him a button down for Christmas.
Estee says
I'm cheap too, so I'll never buy anything worth 300$.
And my husband is just the same. T and shorts and he's happy. And he dreses like that too, whenever we're going out I always look overdressed next to him. ARRRGG….
Aubree says
I think it's beautiful- although I wouldn't be caught dead spending $300 for a coat!!!
My husband likes when I dress up and look nice. He notices. He will express his opinion when he really doesn't like something. That doesn't happen often so I know that if he says it's bad- it's REALLY bad.
Sarah says
kory-what's so funny? that jay hates my clothes? π
and it seems like every guy's favorite outfit is something like a tight tight white shirt, tight tight jeans that make the butt look good with a hot body and hair wavy like victoria's secret models.
i think all our husbands/men would get along really well! ;D
janie says
hello friend!
ok, so i may have to go with jay on this one (and i apologize in advance for the "YEEEAAA-YAAH" in your face that you're probably going to get when he reads this)…
but not the biggest fan from the picture. but then again, clothes look different on different people.
Jen says
LOVE the coat, but I've never spent $300 on any piece of clothing! And I'm pretty sure my husband hates pretty much every outfit I own…. I get a lot of raised eyebrows from him. Luckily he doesn't usually voice his opinion….
Jen says
ps… Have you checked out the coats at modcloth.com? I have a wish list a mile long there, and the prices are a little easier to swallow!
Marisa says
Hahahahahaha!!!So funny, I couldn't stop laughing because my husband said that he will never give an opinion about shoes again, because when he says: Oh this is sooooooo ugly, I say – WHAT??Are you kidding me?I love these shoes!!!
I LOOOOOOOVE THAT COAT!LOVE IT!

I think if anyone can knock off this coat it would be YOU!!

Love this coat, although when I read your post, I made my husband rate it. Yes, you guessed it–3. When I showed him what Jay has said, he just cracked up. My hubby knows he has no taste (and he's colorblind to boot). The coat is great, but I think you should save the money. I'm currently trying to talk myself into a $100 pair of boots, but it's a tough sell.
Amy says
Kory and I have this conversation ALL the time.
When we were dating I had sooo many clothes at my disposal because of roommates (d and ash) and they always had way cuter stuff then I did and I could never afford anything. So of course when I would go out with him I would like to look my best. So I borrowed from them.
But he often says, "whatever happened to that one shirt you wore on this date?" and I say oh that was Diana's, then he says "Oh, what about this shirt?" my response "Oh that was Ashley's" Because he rarely likes the clothes I buy, and is like you once had style? Where did all those shirts go. Sad I know. Haha
I think that is why he thinks this story is funny, because this is a conversation we have a lot at our house.
I think that coat would be darling on you, however I know how it feels when you buy something and your husband doesn't like it even though you do, you subconsciously never wear it. So save yourself the $300 dollars and just make one for yourself. And next time don't ask his opinion. π
Sarah says
haha thanks everyone! i wish we could all have this conversation in person! i think we could talk for HOURS! and jen, yes modcloth is way cute, thanks for the info!!!
@marisa: that is EXACTLY what happens with me! i'll be completely in love w/ something while he thinks it's the most hideous thing ever. i'm like…are you kidding me right now? π @abbie: have you tried endless.com? i just ordered boots from them and it was a $100 boots for $33 total, free shipping! π
@amy:hahaha you guys crack me up. u should've never borrowed clothes, never set the bar high, start low and build from there. ;D
A. M. says
I guy I lived with in the past told me I dressed "dull and dowdy" b/c I prefer solid colors (black, gray, and jewel tones) and never wear prints.
He actually wanted me to wear leopard print jackets! SO not my style.
Needless to say, we broke up.
Abbie Normal says
I'm actually drooling over a couple pairs at endless (thanks for the suggestion–I've never ordered from them, but a friend suggested), but I want all leather so they'll actually last. I'm pretty hard on my shoes. There are lots of really cute pairs much cheaper, though. Maybe we should both just splurge! π
Sarah says
@a.m: haha men. π
@abbie: yeah I get sick of my shoes fast but I want tall brown boots that's at nordstrom. Pricey but if it's a classy thing that'll stand through many trends, I think splurging is okay. π
Alice says
I think the coat is ADORABLE! I don't get why boys don't like this stuff haha! However, I think if you have to question on spending that much money, you probably shouldn't get it. For me i know it's worth the money when I'm immediately like "oh my gosh. I have to have this. $300 is alot, but i HAVE to have this." If you have to talk yourself into it, you probably should wait and see if you're thinking "wow. I wish I'd gotten that". Does that make sense?
Flora says
I like the coat, but I honestly wouldn't want to pay $300 for it. But if Jay said you could buy it, then he should be a man of his word and let you buy it. π Then he'll see you in it and change his mind.
Sarah says
@alice: that totally makes sense and i totally agree! if you have second thoughts about something and you keep going back and forth whether to get it or not, don't get it! and if you don't get something and you can't forget about it, then it means you should get it! haha i'm glad we're on the same page. π
@flora:he said i could get it even if he hated it but i don't think i'm willing to spend $300 on something he hates u know? if it was like $50 n under, i would get it in a heartbeat. π
Morgan says
I think the coat is SO cute! Husbands are weird. π
Gabriela says
My husband said 2 or 3, and confirmed that it's too busy for him. LOL!
Sarah says
@gabriela, that is EXACTLY what my husband said! that it was too busy! haha for men it's too distracting to actually look at the body shape… men… π
TranquilityKnots says
You can definitely make that coat! You are so good at it. You have great taste, so I am sure you can make it even better.
If I go shopping with DH, he will pick something for me and saying how much he loves it, how colorful it is, I will be "Are you kidding me?" He doesn't like me wearing animal prints, or too much floral prints, he doesn't like my classy black and white dress, and he hates my closet because it's "all the similar color". What do you expect when you say I cannot wear all the others. Men!?
And Sarah, if you like Nordstrom, you should check out Nordstrom rack. DH once got a pair of Ecco shoes for only $35! and I got a pair of Italian boots (forgot the brand) for less than $30! You would love that store.
