I'm in love with pleats. So I was ecstatic to find this when I was rummaging through my mom's closet.
My mom's out of the country for 6 months so I'm just hoping she won't notice it missing when she returns.
I'm so kidding! I found this in the "old" clothes pile where she no longer wears it. But mom, if you had changed your mind, I'm sorry.... you can borrow it anytime? ;)
the after:
Now, I knew you would ask for a tutorial so here it is. You'll be surprised at how simple it is!
Directions:
1. Put the skirt over your head. The elastic waist part will go around your neck. To know how far along to cut the horizontal lines(for the sleeves), mark where you want the sleeves to end. Mine is about 2-3 inches above my elbows. To know how far along to start the vertical lines, pinch the sides of the skirt to where your waist ends, and mark it, while making sure the pleats are not stretched out. Leave an extra inch or two on each sides and mark it. That's where you'll start cutting the skirt vertically.
2. Flip it inside out and sew the vertical lines on both sides. Cut off the extra fabric.
3. Use fray check on the seam of the sleeves.
That's it! It's easy as 1,2,3! You just pull it over your head and you're ready to go. I made the belt using the extra fabric I cut. Or you can use a belt you already have.
Here are better photographs of the dress taken by Jessica Peterson. These pictures were submitted to the dress design contest for Shabby Apple, and I won the contest! For winning the contest, they have manufactured my designs and are now sold at their online store. Click here to view my dress.
Now go see if you have any old skirts you can transform!
Estimated time: 30 mins.
Budget: $4
Skill level: very beginner
FAQ's
Q: How did you make the neckline?
A: I didn't! I left it just as it is. The elastic waist just fell nicely around my shoulders so I didn't change it.
Q: What kind of lining does the skirt have? Does it have a lining?
A. No, it doesn't have a lining. You'll need to wear something underneath like a slip because when you hold up your arms, it will show a huge chunk of your sides. I wear a spaghetti strap tank dress under it that's similar to a slip.
Q: It looks too good to be true. I wonder about the waistband and how it lays so perfect. What size skirt would I buy?
A: More important than the size of the skirt, I would first try on the dress around my neck and see how the waistband falls around your shoulders and neck. If it falls nicely, no need to change anything. If it's too loose, you can sew one side of the skirt smaller(no need to sew two sides since the elastic waistband pleated skirt has no center/sides/back really. If it's too tight, find another skirt.
Q: How long was the skirt when you started?
A: It hit my ankle bones when I had the skirt on regular. You'll need an ankle length or longer to have the outcome as shown above. If you don't mind the length shorter, go for it! I think it'll be adorable shorter.

ReplyDeleteWow - that is an amazing transformation.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS IDEA! I can't wait to try it out on my own. I made a halter dress from a vintage gold broom skirt just a bit ago. Here's the link if you are interested in seeing that:

ReplyDeletesarah, i definitely agree that your dress looks WAY better than the 740. i'm going to have to show this off to my friends here :)

sarah~ it turned out so well! I agree with Janie that this dress looks cuter than the Burberry dress. And it looks so good with the necklace!

ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! I love the dress transformation...your Mom will probably be thrilled that her old skirt turned into such a cute and stylish dress!
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
I love this! I am so sure my mom has a skirt just like this. I hope she hasn't given it away! I'm not crafty, but I'm pretty sure I can ask nicely and she'll do this for me!
ReplyDeletesuchakingdom.blogspot.com
wow, that's fantastic. you've got mad sewing skills, that's for sure! and your profiles are stinkin' adorable!
ReplyDeleteWhat the what?! Sarah, you amaze me... you would seriously make a potato sack look sexy. I dare you! :) What did you do to make the neck line (waist) smaller? is it all just elastic around?
ReplyDeleteaw thank you everyone! I appreciate all the comments, you guys are all too kind!
ReplyDelete@beverly: the waist was already an elastic waist so I didn't have to do anything to it. But if you were to do it with a non-waisted skirt, I suggest putting elastic on the waist/neckline. But see if it'll look good anyway without doing anything first when draped around your shoulders. We all love less work right? :)
Wow! Simply Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful Dress! You did an amazing job with the refashion.
ReplyDeletethat is amazing!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous and miles ahead of Burberry! This dress actually reminds me more of a dress I saw on the satorialist. i posted it on my blog a little while ago:

ReplyDeleteI expected a crazy difficult tutorial, but what a good surprise.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!
I cannot believe how good your dress turned out! It's completely insane to me how simple your tutorial is. You're making me want to go hunting at the thrift store for a long pleated skirt!
ReplyDeleteUber Chic for Cheap
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! Beautiful dress!
ReplyDeleteSarah, what a beautiful dress! It is definitely better than the Burberry dress..BTW, I think mom wears that skirt all the time..You might want to replace it in the closet before she gets back.. :)
ReplyDeleteWOW! That was amazing you can come over to my closet anytime and rework anything you want!
ReplyDeleteThat is gorgeous! If only i was so clever...hmmm maybe one day i'll give it a go. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI stared at your "pattern" for about 10 minutes before I figured out that you didn't change the neckline. It still was the waistband. This transformation is truly one of the best I've ever seen. Your interpretation of the way-too-expensive-for-mortals Burberry dress is much cuter than the original.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing it with us!
Julie @ Knittlebits
AH-MAZING!!!!!!! Who knew you could turn that skirt in to the beautiful dress that you did! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I voted for you! :)

ReplyDeleteBurbury Schmurbury...yours looks stunning! Will try to make my own thanks to your clear instuctions
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, Thank You!
ReplyDeleteI saw your dress at Shabby Apple, and I like it the best. Came here to see your blog, and I am so happy to see that you made a tutorial for this! Awesome and gorgeous; I will make this for sure. Thanks so much for showing me how! What a beautiful dress! This is more lovely than the $700+ Burbury, for sure.
I really like this dress, and what a simple, yet stunning, refashioning!
ReplyDeletea friend showed me your blog a few months ago and i've loved seeing all of your creative ideas!!! it's so amazing to me how natural ideas seem to come to you and that you have a go-get-'em approach to transforming clothes. i just wanted you to know that i tried making this dress. i went to goodwill and found one similar to the skirt you used and well i feel so accomplished :o) it's the first dress i've "made" even though it's not from scratch. thank you so much for sharing your creativity!! it's been so inspiring!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this dress! (Found it through Shabby Apple's site, which I just found). Great transformation and I agree with everyone else - way better than your inspiration. I'm excited to try this out but I have one teensy question. Can you see into the dress from the arm-holes? How did you keep the dress modest from the side (I feel like people would be able to see in if I raised my arms at all.)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
oh my goodness! this is a gorgeous dress! and you are so beautiful! I'm on the hunt for a pleated dress to try this out on! Thanks so much xoxo
ReplyDeletehow long is the skirt?? i'm having a bit of trouble trying to find a long enough skirt for this project! thanks for the tutorial-- i read it last night and am on the hunt for a good skirt! =)
ReplyDeleteI answered this directly to the person awhile ago but I'll answer it here just in case someone else is wondering it too. It is see throug on the arm pit area since the opening is really big. You'll need to wear a slip underneath.
ReplyDeleteand the skirt hit my ankles to begin with. So you'll need to find a skirt that is long like floor length if you want it to be around the knees. Hope that helps and thank you everyone for your kind compliments!
Congratulations on the win! Your dress is gorgeous. How interesting that you were able to make it from a skirt.

ReplyDeleteHumble Homemaking
Your dress is sooo beautiful and I have the perfect skirt for this but am a beginner sewer and am really confused with the sleeves. Did you cut new holes to attach the sleeves? How did you know where to cut your vertical line and how did you know the width of your cut?
ReplyDeletejnchey@hotmail.com
@jesse: no i didn't cut new holes, remember how i said i cut horizontally? the arms go through that big cut. and i just put the skirt over my head (before it was transformed) and pinched where my waist ended and marked it. hope that made sense. if you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog...I love it!! I just started sewing and have been making some "new" clothes out of old ones as well. So fun! This dress is so beautiful and I have a long yellow with white polka dot pleated skirt (a crazy Goodwill find) that would be a wonderful dress! :) I would have never thought of it. Thanks for the great ideas!!
ReplyDeleteI voted for you! Totally glad yours won. Looks so unique. Just 'in'. Ya know? Can't wait to see the SA version.
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteOne more thing. Whenever the dress becomes in stock at Shabby Apple let me know and I'll write a post about it.

I found your blog via Pinterest...and am loving it! Great tutorial for a fabulous dress! I have a black pleated skirt that I just may turn into that dress for next fall/winter :) And now I'm on the lookout for another light colored pleated skirt to have one for summer! I love how comfortable yet incredibly classy your dress turned out :) And that necklace!!...nice work :)
ReplyDeletePS - you have a BEAUTIFUL family!
So okay, I adore your dress and have a skirt...I have cut the horizontal lines, do I sew from the inside cut all the way down the length of the skirt? No more cutting just two straight seams and that's it?
ReplyDeleteThank you for any feedback!!
Lacey
@Lacey: Yep, no more cutting and you sew the inside vertical line all the way down. Sounds too easy right? But it is! :) and just make sure to use fray check on the seams!
ReplyDeleteand thank you, thank you everybody. ya'll are sooooo sweet. and i'm not a great seamstress though, how can I be when it was this easy? :)
That dress is STUNNING! Perfect for work or a cocktail party. Adore it.
ReplyDeleteYou look gorgeous!! When I saw that you made the dress yourself, I was totally blown away. I wanted to let you know that I referred to you on my own blog, in a post I wrote a few weeks ago about my own sewing project, as an awesome example of what super talented ladies such as you can do with a sewing machine. (Sorry it has taken me so long to comment - I blame it on mommy brain.) Anyway, I love your blog! Your projects and the tutorials are really inspiring.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this dress. I really want to try it myself, but I am a bit confused. With the vertical seems on the inside, do you sew the front of the skirt to the back of the skirt so that the extra fabric is on the inside? Do you cut along those vertical lines? Or do you just sew a seam straight on all four sides? For some reason I just cannot see this.
ReplyDeleteyou cut the horizontal lines and then sew the bottom of the horizontal lines vertically(so on both sides) and then cut the extra fabric. then you flip it inside out and that's it! I hope I made sense!
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing, and it does look easy to do. Saw this on pinterest.
ReplyDeleteooh my gosh!!! totally pinning this in my fashion board!! guess who has a black pleated skirt?! yep totally trying this LOOOOOVE it! AMAZING job!
ReplyDeleteI saw this dress months ago and fell in love, so much so that I've been looking all over for a long pleated skirt that I could transform :) I found one today, finally! Just curious how many inches in you cut for the arms? Or did you just pull it over your head and estimate? Can not wait to do this project. Thanks so much for sharing this idea :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I just pulled it over my head, pinched the sides where my waist ended and gave it about 2-3 extra inches and cut from the side until that point. Make sure none of the pleats are stretched out when figuring out the point where your waist ends. Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. I love it - I'm definitely going to try it!
ReplyDeletethis is amazing!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this dress; it is much prettier than the Burberry dress! I'm sorry to be a little ignorant, but you basically have a raw seam that you Fray Check on the sleeves? You didn't hem them? Wouldn't sewing the sleeves leave a raw hem? Again, I'm sorry to be ignorant! Beautiful, beautiful dress!
ReplyDelete@salina, thank you, and yes it is a raw seam and I just used fray check on the seams.
ReplyDeleteThis is simply gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteSarah you are so talented. your kids are so lucky!

Oh. My. Word!!!!! I am in love!!!!!!!! Quite feminine, yet chic. I can't wait to make this and show it off to all my friends. They will all be SO enchanted and amazed!
ReplyDeleteI also have one of those gauzy crinkled/crimped skirts that you twist all around into a wad to maintain it's "pleats". I think it will make a fabulous bohemian version of your design!
Again, truly wonderful post!
You should sent me the link/picture when you make it! Good luck!

I love your tutorials, and I love that they are modest-friendly tutorials. Pleese keep doing them because they are so inspiring.
Hi! I can't view the picture!
DeleteThat's beautiful. So that was just a really long skirt?! And the waistband turned into the neckline?
ReplyDeleteLisa, yes, it was a very long skirt, it hit my ankles when worn. And yes, you don't do anything to the waistband, just slip it over your head! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comments everyone!
The dress is awesome Sarah! I definitely like yours better than the expensive one. One question: In the picture of you, do you have on a belt, or did you sew one on?
ReplyDeleteHey Michelle, I'm sorry for the late response. I.cut off a couple inches off one side of the skirt and made a waist-tie with it.
DeleteLove this one as well!!
ReplyDeleteI shared it ,too , hope thats okey :)

DeleteCurious did you take the elastic out of the neckline? I'm LOVING this dress!!!! Headed to thrift store today n see how many new dresses I will be making myself!!!!! Thanks for the tutorial and your creative talents!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNo, I didn't do anything to the neckline! The elastic makes a nice round neckline by itself. :) Thank you so much for your sweet comment and if you make one, let me know, I'd love to feature it!
DeleteLove this dress, saw it several weeks ago and have loved it ever since, thanks for sharing the super easy tutorial.

ReplyDeleteYour dress looks sooooo nice!!! Really great job!!
ReplyDeleteAmazing what a little creativity can do! I agree with several of the posters, your dress is much better than the inspiriation piece. Especially like the price tag... FREE
ReplyDeleteThis is so amazing! I am officially on the lookout for a similar skirt so I can give it a try. Well done!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Good luck finding a pleated skirt! :))

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely AMAZING! So beautiful!!!! Love the photos!
ReplyDeleteHow did you do the neck part? im trying to make a blue version of yours :)
ReplyDeleteha, already found it, thanks for sharing!
DeleteHaha, great! :)
DeleteWhat did you layer under the dress so no one could see your boob through the arm hole? Would it look ridiculous with a full slip? Would just a cami be better. I suck at styling !
ReplyDeleteI wore a spaghetti tank top dress under it, it's kind of like a slip. And no, it's not silly at all, you wouldn't be able to see the slip(unless when you raise your arms up high). Best luck!
DeleteDid you have to adjust the waistband/neckline? It lays so nice and flat.
ReplyDeleteNo, I didn't do anything to the neckline. It's an elastic waistband so it just naturally lies nice and flat. :)
DeleteWow! This is sooo cool! Great idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! Love it!
ReplyDeletethis is really cute! now i must quest to fing a LONGER pleated skirt.. all of mine are way shorter than that LMAO it came out really nice! inspired!!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteIt's really really pretty, but I have a question, what size is the skirt and what size are you? Just to know how big/small skirt I should buy! :)
ReplyDeleteThe skirt was about a medium and I'm a size XS. But since the waist band is stretchy and the pleats expand a lot, I wouldn't worry too much about the sizing. I would recommend putting the waistband around your neck to see if you like how it falls. Hope that helps and good luck! :)
DeleteYour dress is so beautiful and so easy. i love it... And you have a very very nice blog. Best wishes...

Gosh ! I am in love ! I bought a pleated skirt today ,and I have modeled it on my Lottie ( mannequin ) Looks stunning with a blazer !From granny skirt to elegant ! At the minute it's like a boob tube dress with a belt and blazer ... Looks lush ! BUT now I have seen your awesome blog , I think my ideas have changed ! Going to make this dress tomorrow :D . ReplyDeleteUm HELLO!!!! That is the most brilliant thing I've ever seen! One of the ladies I go to church with gave me like 20 of those skirts in all kind of colors for a wedding present when I got married. I absolutely love them, but the elastic is shot in a few of them. Now I TOTALLY KNOW what I am going to do with them. You my dear are a GRNIUS!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! This is absolutely fabulous! I like your dress more than the Burberry one!
ReplyDeleteWow! What an amazing transformation! Just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWas the skirt floor length when you started?
ReplyDeleteThe length was to my ankles, it was pretty long.
DeleteI think that your dress is cuter anyways...darling great job!!
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely amazing!! Gorgeous! Do you think iff you cut the skirt in more of an a-line, you could possibly fit a thin petticoat underneath to make it a little poofy??
ReplyDeleteYes, I think so! Cut it in a dramatic A-line, and you'll be fine!
DeleteThis is gorgeous! Never though to do this with a skirt, but I will have to try it out soon.

This is such an awesome tutorial! I have a long pleated skirt I have been bored with for a while so Im excited to try this. I have a question and I hope Im not repeating someone else. Was your skirt lined to begin with? My skirt has an attached straight/not pleated slip and I am wondering how that will work in to the cuts or if I need to remove it all together. Thank you in advance and thanks for the tutorials!
ReplyDeleteIt is not lined. I wear a slip like tank dress under it. Hope that helps and best luck!
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteIt looks to good to be true, but I wonder about the waistband and how it lays so perfect. What size skirt would I buy? I so do want to try making it but am skeptical about the outcome. So I guess I will hit the thrift store.
ReplyDeleteThe skirt was a medium and I'm a size xs. But more than the size, it's more important how the waist part falls around your shoulders/neck when you put it around you.
DeleteVery nice dress. You are good at knitting, You look beautiful in it. love you xoxo
ReplyDeleteAre you serious? That is honestly remarkable! I love upcycled dresses. Say hello to your new follower, you gorgeous genius you!
ReplyDeleteI live in a retirement community right now, where the secondhand clothing at thrift stores is just a tad outdated. I will be out in town today, hitting up these older ladies throw aways!
DeleteI love the detail in that dress and your ankle strap sandals are beautiful!
Hope you had an amazing time!

Hi Sarah, your dress inspired me. I was shopping at my local discount fabric store and I found some pleated fabric similar to this skirt. I grabbed in the hopes of mimicking your refashion! Unfortunately, I'll be construction the whole thing!!!! I just wanted to ask, what kind of lining does your dress have or are you just wearing some foundations under it? Thanks! Aileen
ReplyDeleteThe dress doesn't have any lining so I wear a long tank dress under it. A slip would work as well! Best luck with the project and please share with me your final result! :)
DeleteHi Sarah! I saw your tutorial a while back and it has been on my mind ever since! I recently bought a pleated skirt online that was in the color that I've been looking for. However, the waistband is a thick elastic and when I tried on the skirt, the neckline/waistband "popped up" because the fabric was too thick. Do you have any advice or suggestions? I was thinking of maybe taking in the waistband to make it fit better but being a beginner and a college student...I am at a loss :(
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! -Annabel
